Rangers were left disappointed by a questionable incident in the first half as they concluded a mostly disappointing William Hill Premiership season with a 2-2 draw against Hibernian.
The team in second place took the lead early on thanks to their top scorer Cyriel Dessers, and believed they should have scored a second goal in the 15th minute when Nico Raskin seemed to have pushed the ball over the line. However, the referee did not award the goal and Hibs quickly equalized through Kieron Bowie.
Raskin did manage to put the visitors back in the lead early in the second half, but Martin Boyle responded with his 99th goal for the third-placed Hibs, extending their unbeaten run at home to six months.
The draw meant interim manager Barry Ferguson – who is expected to step aside for a new manager in the summer – has only seen his team win six out of 15 matches since taking over from Philippe Clement in February.
Hibs' manager David Gray made four changes to the team that secured third place with a 2-2 draw against St Mirren, bringing in Warren O’Hora, Alasana Manneh, Nicky Cadden, and Bowie. Veteran striker Dwight Gayle was on the bench for his final professional match.
Rangers had to make two changes to their lineup due to injuries from their 3-1 win against Dundee United, with Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Danilo coming in for Jefte and Hamza Igamane.
After a minute's applause in memory of the late former Hibs owner Tom Farmer, Rangers opened the scoring in the second minute. Raskin played a headed pass into the box where Dessers controlled the ball on his chest and scored with a powerful low shot from 12 yards.
Rangers faced a setback in the 10th minute when defender Leon Balogun had to leave the field due to injury, being replaced by Robin Propper. They came close to doubling their lead when Vaclav Cerny's shot was saved by the keeper shortly after.
The pivotal moment came in the 15th minute when Rangers thought they should have been 2-0 up but instead found themselves level at 1-1.
Raskin believed he had scored after his shot was partially saved, but Hibs managed to clear the ball before Bowie scored for the hosts. There was a VAR check before the goal was confirmed, although later replays suggested Raskin's effort had crossed the line.
Despite the exciting start reminiscent of a past high-scoring draw between the teams, there were no more goals before halftime. Boyle missed a good opportunity with a wide volley, while Rangers' captain James Tavernier tried his luck from distance a couple of times.
Raskin did find the back of the net early in the second half with a header from Tavernier's corner kick.
The Hibs goalkeeper Smith made a crucial save to deny Danilo in the 62nd minute, and the hosts responded by equalizing through Boyle after a superb cross from Cadden. This result meant Hibs remained unbeaten at home since November 9.
