Under-21 Euros predictions: Spain to sparkle in Slovakia

Under-21 Euros predictions: Spain to sparkle in Slovakia

The Under-21 European Championships kick off on Wednesday as the cream of the continent's young talent get ready to shine on the international stage in Slovakia.

Germany, Spain and defending champions England are among the teams fancied to do well in the tournament, while the likes of France, Netherlands, Italy and Portugal will all also be aiming for glory between now and June 28.

High expectations for talented Spain

Spain have named several high-profile players in their squad for the Under-21 Euros and it is no surprise to see La Rojita among the favourites for glory this summer.

They kick off Group A with a tricky test against the hosts before going up against Italy and Romania but the quality in the Spanish squad should ensure a fairly smooth progression to the quarter-finals and beyond.

Barcelona duo Gerard Martin and Pablo Torre are among the stand-out names in their squad, while centre-back Rafa Marin, who recently helped Napoli win Serie A, and skipper Benat Turrientes, of Real Sociedad, are other important players.

Germany and England also contenders

Germany are making their 11th appearance in the Under-21 Euros and they have reached the final in three of the last four editions, winning in 2017 and 2021, while they were runners-up in 2019.

The current crop of German youngsters will be aiming to do a lot better than the squad that was selected two years ago, which failed to make it past the group stage, and Antonio Di Salvo's side, who are in Group B with England, Czech Republic and Slovenia, are highly respected.

Germany have Brighton midfielder Brajan Gruda to call upon, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt winger Ansgar Knauff, who caught the eye in the Bundesliga this season with four goals and six assists.

England, meanwhile, will be aiming to defend the trophy they won in Georgia and Romania in 2023 and Lee Carsley's side are one of the most feared teams in the competition.

There is plenty of Premier League experience in the England squad, which includes Newcastle's Tino Livramento, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Tottenham's Archie Gray.

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, rising Manchester City star James McAtee and Arsenal forward Ethan Nwaneri are others who are expected to light up the tournament.

France eye glory in Slovakia too

France, who have Spurs duo Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert in their squad, should be another of the countries to go far in the competition, while Netherlands, Italy and Portugal will all have ambitions to do well.

Netherlands have included Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen and Ajax midfielder Kenneth Taylor in their squad, Italy have Niccolo Pisilli of Roma and Leeds' Wilfried Gnonto to rely on, while Portugal starlet Henrique Araujo scored six goals for Arouca in the Primeira Liga this season.

Prediction

Defending champions England certainly have the experience and ability to compete for the trophy again, while Germany and France are also likely contenders but Spain are tipped to go all the way in Slovakia.

Coach Denia knows what it takes to triumph in these sort of tournaments, having already won Olympic gold and European Under-17 and Under-19 titles with Spain.
