Julia Stierl accidentally scored an own goal in the second half, giving Norway a 2-1 victory against hosts Switzerland in their first match of the European Women’s Championship in Basel.
The Switzerland defender's own goal came four minutes after Norway's captain, Ada Hegerberg, scored with a fantastic header to equalize Nadine Riesen's first-half goal for the Swiss in front of a crowd of 34,063 at St Jakob-Park.
Hegerberg missed a penalty in the second half for Norway, a team that had lost six of their last seven matches at the Euros and was mostly outplayed by the hosts throughout the match.
Switzerland’s midfielder, Geraldine Reuteler, hit the crossbar with a curling shot before Pia Sundhage's team took a deserved lead in the 25th minute with a goal from wing-back Riesen, who capitalized on a loose ball to score low into the net.
A lackluster Norway continued to struggle against their opponents, and Reuteler missed the target with a shot as halftime approached.
Norway's performance did not improve after the break, but captain Hegerberg brought her team back into the game with a powerful header in the 54th minute from a corner kick, marking her 50th international goal.
Just four minutes later, the Norwegians took the lead when Switzerland's center-back Stierli accidentally redirected the ball into her own net while trying to intercept Caroline Graham Hansen's low cross.
Switzerland's goalkeeper, Livia Peng, saved a one-on-one opportunity against Hegerberg as an improved Norway team tried to extend their lead.
They had another chance when Reuteler handled the ball in the box from a corner, but Hegerberg missed the penalty kick wide.
Switzerland pushed for an equalizer, and in the final minute, Iman Beney's shot on goal was blocked by Ingrid Engen.
