Borussia Dortmund favored to win against Club Brugge in opening match

Last year's second-placed team Borussia Dortmund are set to begin their Champions League journey with a match against Club Brugge.

The Bundesliga giants, who lost 2-0 in the final in June to Real Madrid, start this season against the Belgian champions. BVB should have enough quality to start with a win.

Team update

Kyriani Sabbe is back from injury for the home team, but Bjorn Meijer and Casper Nielsen remain sidelined.

Andreas Skov Olsen, who has scored three goals already this season, is expected to play on the wing, while young talent Chemsdine Talbi will be looking for a spot in the starting lineup after his goal as a substitute last weekend.

New signing Serhou Guirassy is likely to lead the attack for Dortmund alongside Karim Adeyemi, who scored twice in the victory over Heidenheim recently.

Yan Couto and Gio Reyna are both doubtful for the visitors due to injuries.

Match insights

Dortmund won the European title in 1997 and were runners-up in 2013 and 2024.

BVB currently sit second in the Bundesliga after wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Heidenheim, and a draw with Werder Bremen.

Club Brugge are leading the Belgian league with four wins, one draw, and two losses from their first seven games.

Club Brugge were finalists in the old European Cup, losing to Liverpool in the 1978 final.

Dortmund have won three of the last four encounters between the two teams in this tournament, without conceding a goal.

Expectations

Dortmund have a stronger recent history in Europe compared to Brugge, reaching the final last season before losing to Real Madrid.

BVB have a lot of experience in the Champions League and have advanced from the group stage in nine of the last 11 years.

In this year's competition format, the German team will believe they can progress to the knockout stage again, this time as one of the top eight teams, with a strong start being crucial.

Brugge will not be easy opponents, sitting at the top of the Belgian league with 13 points from seven matches, including a 3-0 win over Kortrijk recently.

However, it will be a tough challenge for the hosts as they prepare to face talented players like Julian Brandt, Emre Can, Donyell Malen, Adeyemi, and others.

The visitors, unbeaten in four games, come into this match after a 4-2 victory over Heidenheim and will be confident in their ability to secure a win.
