Ryan Ledson keeps calm to lead Preston to victory in lengthy penalty shootout

Ryan Ledson scored the decisive penalty goal as Preston emerged victorious in a thrilling penalty shoot-out, beating Fulham 16-15 to eliminate them from the Carabao Cup.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Reiss Nelson matched Ledson's early goal, leading to an intense penalty shoot-out where the first 16 penalties were all successfully converted.

After Jorge Cuenca and Kaine Kesler-Hayden missed their penalties, the scoring continued as players took their second attempts.

Finally, at 15-15, Timothy Castagne missed his penalty shot, and Ledson successfully converted his spot-kick past Steven Benda, delighting the Deepdale fans.

Ledson, not typically known for scoring, managed to net his second goal in two cup matches this season with a spectacular volley in the 35th minute.

Playing his first game for Fulham, Arsenal loanee Nelson scored from a cross by former Tottenham player Ryan Sessegnon to equalize just after the hour mark.

Both Marco Silva and Paul Heckingbottom made significant changes to their teams, and one of Preston's substitutes, Stefan Thordarson, came close with a powerful long-range shot after 12 minutes.

Kesler-Hayden had a great opportunity for Preston in the 20th minute, but his close-range header from Mads Frokjaer's cross was saved brilliantly by Benda.

Moments later, Harrison Reed appeared set to score for Fulham as he received a pass in the penalty box from Sessegnon, but Liam Lindsay made a crucial block to deny the goal.

Approaching the half-hour mark, Kesler-Hayden redeemed himself for his previous miss by bravely sliding in to block another goal-bound shot, this time from Sessegnon, as Fulham increased their pressure.

Preston took the lead as Ledson unleashed a stunning 20-yard volley into the bottom corner after a poor clearance from Reed.

Despite this, Silva's Fulham team, boasting Premier League quality, began to show their class in the second half.

Just before the hour mark, Reed struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range shot, and Freddie Woodman had to make a save to deny Rodrigo Muniz's follow-up attempt.

This served as a warning for what was to come as Nelson scored in the 61st minute to level the score.

Woodman then made an impressive save in the 70th minute to deny Harry Wilson's close-range effort as the former Liverpool player sought to finish off a slick Fulham move.

The introductions of Emile Smith Rowe, Alex Iwobi, and Raul Jimenez underlined the formidable challenge that Preston faced, but they rose to the occasion.
